Securing access to any resource, anywhere
Zero Trust has become the industry standard for safeguarding your entire digital estate. Central to Zero Trust is securing identity and access, which is essential for protecting resources, enforcing security policies, and ensuring compliance in today’s dynamic digital landscape.
With Microsoft Entra, we help our customers create a trust fabric that securely connects any trustworthy identity with anything, anywhere. Driven by the adoption of multicloud strategies in the era of AI, customers are encountering more challenges in securing access, not just across multiple public and private clouds, but also for business apps and on-premises resources. Unlike securing access for humans or within a single environment, where customers have established methods to address challenges, securing access anywhere is more complicated due to the dynamic nature of today’s digital estate and tools to address emerging challenges need further development. To support our customers, we unveiled our vision for securing access in any cloud at this year’s RSA conference. Today, we’re excited to dive deeper into our future investment aimed at securing access to cloud resources from any identity across diverse cloud environments.
Managing multicloud complexity in a rapidly evolving digital environment
Organizations are grappling with substantial challenges in navigating cloud access complexities, often citing issues like fragmented role-based access control (RBAC) systems, and compliance violations. These challenges are compounded by the growing use of cloud services from various cloud service providers. There have been links to several notable breaches attributed to over-permissioned identities. Our customer engagements reveal that organizations are currently using 7 to 8 products, including privileged access management (PAM) and identity governance and administration (IGA) solutions to tackle multicloud access challenges. Despite their efforts, such as toggling across multiple solutions and increasing their workforce, many organizations still struggle to achieve full visibility into their cloud access.
Our 2024 State of Multicloud Security Risk Report underscores these ongoing challenges arising from over-permissioned human and workload identities. Analysis of past year usage data from Microsoft Entra Permissions Management confirms that the complexities in multicloud environments primarily stem from rapid identity growth and over-provisioned permissions (learn more), including:
Over 51,000 permissions that can be granted to identities – 50% of which are identified as high-risk permissions.
Only 2% of those 51,000 permissions were used.
Of the 209M identities discovered, more than 50% are identified as super identities that have all permissions to access all resources.
Introducing our vision for cloud access management: Building a converged platform
Today, I’m excited to expand on our vision for cloud access management.
As businesses expand, organizations inevitably face challenges of overprovisioning at various levels. Initially, this manifests as granting more access to accommodate growing teams and workloads and can lead to overlapping access privileges. To address these issues, organizations must proactively identify vulnerabilities in identities and permissions and respond swiftly and, eventually, automatically. There’s a pressing need for a new solution that empowers all identities to access resources in any cloud securely while adhering to least-privileged permissions.
To address this critical need, we’re developing a converged platform that encompasses a comprehensive set of capabilities. This upcoming platform is designed to streamline the journey from risk discovery to remediation for secure access to any cloud resource whenever deviations occur, offering:
Visibility: Gain insights into all identities and permissions assigned and used and detect risky permissions.
Risk remediation: Remediate risky permissions with recommendations.
Granular controls: Grant the right privileges for role-specific durations.
Automated governance: Implement continuous compliance through automated policies.
Our journey to secure access to resources in any cloud is advancing by building upon our industry-leading Microsoft Entra products:
Permissions Management (CIEM) for delivering visibility into identities, permissions, and usage.
Privileged Identity Management (PAM) for enforcing least-privileged controls for both human and workload identities.
ID Governance (IGA) for automating identity lifecycle and access workflows regardless of origin or usage.
Workload ID (IAM for workloads) for offering customized authorization policies for workload identities.
Additionally, as part of our continuous Copilot journey, we’re leveraging AI/ML to enhance all the technologies within the cloud access management platform. This enables organizations to uncover risks that are otherwise challenging to detect manually, identify the most significant risks, propose impactful remediations, and recommend usage-based custom roles and policies for any identity as the platform adoption grows. It will help simplify cloud access management and provide more effective ways to secure cloud environments for organizations.
Our commitment
At Microsoft, we’re committed to bringing this vision to life for our customers through the advancement and innovation of our newly converged platform, designed to secure access to resources in any cloud. Additionally, this vision extends to securing access to resources anywhere, including on-premises and business apps. Our goal is to help our customers enhance their security for any access to any resource in the era of AI and robust workload identities.
We look forward to collaborating with the community to realize this vision, empowering every organization to implement least-privileged access and permissions across all identities in multicloud and hybrid environments. We’ll keep you posted on our progress towards this vision. Until our next update, we invite you to explore our products that form the foundation of our cloud access management vision. Export matlab variable to be imported in QGis
Dear all,
I need to export a 1000×1000 matrix containing sound pressure level of a specific region to be later imported at QGis.
I tried to do that using netCDF files, which is ok, however the coordinate system is not the same than in QGis (it is used the WGS84 coordinate system) and when I import the file there it is not in the correct location.
So, my question is, how can I export my variable maintaing the correct coordinate system/or change the coordinate system in matlab to correspond to the same coordinate system in QGIs.
Thank you in advance.Dear all,

Strange behavior in SharePoint Search (Microsoft Search and PnP modern Search)
There is a managed metadata column (multi-select) that is mapped to a RefinableString managed property. Search Query tool shows the correct values.
There are multiple documents that have multiple values selected in the managed metadata column, documents are stored within many libraries.
Let`s look at a Document “Document1” with 2 metadata values selected: processName1, processName2.
Case 1: Search for ProcessName1
When I search in the library, these results appear:
RefinableString120=processName1 – 3 results, ok
RefinableString120:processName1 – 3 results, ok
When I search the site, these results appear:
RefinableString120=processName1 – 3 results (from just 1 library), 22 expected
RefinableString120:processName1 – more results from many libraries
When I search using a custom search page with PnP modern search webparts:
Manually select the refinement value from dropdown for processName1 – 22 results, ok
Search RefinableString120:processName1 – 22 results, ok
Search RefinableString120=processName1 – 19 results, 3 missing
The missing results are exactly those documents that are the only results I got when I use the site search box with the equals query (RefinableString120=processName1).
Case 2: Search for an other metadata value “processName2”
Second, when I search for another processName, it works:
RefinableString120=processName2 – 17 results, ok
RefinableString120:processName2 – 17 results, ok
Case 3: Search for an other “Document2” with processName1 from Case 1 works also fine.
I see this behavior in 2 different tenants.
Using the SP Editor Search feature also show this behavior. A search for “RefinableString120=value” (equals) shows all these items, that can only be found in the library or PnP modern WebPart Search by using “RefinableString120:value” (contains).
Library and site were reindexed multiple times.
Can anyone help me to find the reason and a solution? Thanks.

Importing Mesh Toolkit into the project leaves .NET Host process running in the background
After importing the Mesh Toolkit into the Unity project, a .NET Host process runs in the background and consumes some resources (around 5-8% of the CPU).
It points to the dotnet runtime stored in Unity.
“C:Program FilesUnityHubEditor2022.3.15f1EditorDataNetCoreRuntimedotnet.exe”
Closing all Unity instances doesn’t close this process. The more projects you open, the more processes run in the background.
Running an update of Mesh Toolkit in Package Manager will create another .NET Host process in the background. So, it is clearly related to the Mesh Toolkit installer.
The .Net Host process can be manually killed in the Task Manager and will not reopen itself when the Unity project opens. So, killing it is necessary after each import or upgrade.
The easiest way to reproduce is to create an empty URP project in Unity and import Mesh Toolkit as it is described in the documentation https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mesh/develop/build-your-basic-environment/add-the-mesh-toolkit-package
Import Mesh Toolkit. Close Unity when imported and check in Task Manager that .NET Host will be visible on the list.
Mesh Toolkit versions where it can be reproduced: 5.2406.193, 5.2405.238, 5.2403.243

Will TFS 2015 work with SQL Server 2019/2022?
(I realize that this question may not be pertinent to this group. If someplace else would be better, please direct me to it.)
We still have an old TFS 2015 instance running on-prem. It uses SQL Server 2012 for the TFS database. The DBAs want to upgrade that database to SQL Server 2022. I wasn’t around when whoever it was that setup our TFS environment. I have no idea if TFS 2015 will work with SQL Server 2022. Can anyone please tell me if this is going to cause us problems?

Setup multiple multifactor authentication for one account
Hello,
I would like to know the best way to set up multiple MFAs for one single account used by different users. Our configuration only allows authenticator apps and phones. But with the app, the messages go to all the users who set up the MFA for this account. Is there a better way to accomplish this?

Need standalone desktop version, need to stay up-to-date with the latest version
I need to upgrade from QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2021 to QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2024. This would be the standalone 2024 version, not the ‘Plus’ version, which requires a subscription, with a license that’s good for 3 years (like all the rest of the previous Desktop versions were).

Only some images are not loading in gallery?
Hi there!
I have a PowerApp that pulls from a SharePoint list that has an image field.
In the app, I have a gallery that pulls the image, the title, and the description for each item. each item has a .PNG icon as the image if that is helpful.
70% of the items are pulling in perfectly. About 30% are not pulling in the image at all. It seems that maybe the larger images are struggling more, but that rule doesn’t seem consistent, and I do not see any guidance anywhere about what the size limit might be (if there is one and that is indeed the problem?)
Any thoughts appreciated!

EVENT RECAP | European Collaboration and Cloud Summits 2024
Wiesbaden, Germany added 3,000+ tech enthusiast between May 14-16, 2024 – in attendance at the European Collaboration and Cloud Summits. We, too, were pleased to attend – to participate and gain so much input from everyone. It was a packed week filled with insights, feedback, and fun. Below is a recap of various aspects of the event – across keynotes, general sessions, breakout sessions, and the multifaceted Expo Hall.
Beyond reading below, review tons of great pics the ECS event team took and posted; we sprinkled our own throughout this article.
ECS24 in a nutshell:
3,000+ attendees
212 speakers overall – 121 MVPs, 11 RDs, 42 from Microsoft
241 sessions | 12 tutorials (workshops)
70 sponsors | One giant Expo Hall
Keynotes & general sessions
The event kicked off with a combined general keynote, “Thriving in the age of Copilots” with host, Laurie Pottmeyer, and panelists: Dan Holme, Vesa Juvonen, Dona Sarkar, and Jason Himmelstein. We all got a peek into their younger years (actual photos of themselves from ~ age 10) and how they’ve grown up with tech in their lives. Each then led an open discussion on their aeras of expertise in the context of this era of AI and copilots.
Across the main two days of the event, we delivered four broader, general sessions: 1) “Modern work in the era of AI” with host: Mark Kashman and panelists: Cathy Dew, Liz Sundet, and Fabian Williams, 2) “Adopt, build, and automate AI-powered solution development” with host: Heather Cook and panelists: Claire Edgson, Laura Graham-Brown, Albert-Jan Schot, Martina Grom, and Kevin McDonnell, 3) “AI landscape” with Carlotta Castelluccio, and “This is why we can’t have the nice things” with Dona Sarkar. Each general session built off the general keynote, provided more depth across various areas of Microsoft 365, Power Platform, and Azure.
Bonus: The ECS team recorded the general keynote live – now on-demand on their YouTube channel, “European Collaboration and Cloud Summit 2024 Opening – Live Stream” (video below jumps to the start of the session):
Breakout sessions
Breakouts are where learning breaks out. We know it’s crucial to ensure your organization is technically ready for the full potential of Copilot for Microsoft 365. Across the 241 sessions, attendees were presented with technical readiness and the latest guidance. All presenter experts shared best practices on how to leverage AI and to maximize the benefits of Copilot within your organization – along with a ton of core learning across all the major Microsoft apps and services.
When discovering opportunities across Azure, Copilot, and OpenAI, professionals, entrepreneurs, and businesses were invited to up their knowledge and establish meaningful connections. Attendees experienced interactive demos, enlightening discussions, and deep dives into Microsoft’s strategic direction with advances in cloud. The goal was to discover both ‘how-to’ and increase awareness of the ‘what-if’ – focusing on the impact of cloud adoption and gravitating towards Responsible AI.
Expo Hall + Cloud AI Statup Stage + tutorials
The *Expo Hall* was hopping with demos, discussions, interviews, podcasts, lightning talks, foosball, cotton candy, SWAG, prizes, and community. There was a busy Cloud AI Startup Stage, a Business Stage, and shorter talks delivered in front of a shiny airstream trailer.
Cloud AI Startup Stage
This was a highly informative and engaging event focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its potential for startups. The Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub Program is a platform to provide startups with the resources, tools, and support they need to succeed.
This portion of the event offered value to budding entrepreneurs and established startups looking to scale. For example, on day 2, we focused on accelerating innovation with Microsoft Founders Hub and Azure AI. Startups could kickstart their journey with up to $150k of Azure credits and gain access to 30+ tools and services, benefiting from additional credits and offerings as they evolve. It’s a great way for Startups to navigate technical and business challenges with the help of free, one on one sessions.
Women in Tech & Allies Panel – in front of the Airstream trailer on the show floor moderator Heather Cook and panelists, Jonah Andersson, Carlotta Castelluccio, Antje Lamartine, Sandy Ussia and Gabrielle Williams held an engaging discussion on the current opportunities and challenges presented by the era of AI. The panel took many questions from the standing-room-only crowd.
The tutorial (workshop) day went full steam — aka, depth training on Copilot, Viva/SharePoint-powered intranets, Power BI, Microsoft 365 extensibility & admin workshops, ++. This day saw 700 attendees across 12 tutorials.
In the end…

I have a problem in using imsegkmeans in a for loop
I’m using several tools in MatLab to segmentate a video I took with a camera. Everything seems to work well, except for the fact that when I ask MatLab to show me the pictures with imsegkmeans they turn out all in different shades of blue and even the binarized image is all blue. However, apparently it’s just a matter of visualization, since I’m using the binarized image to extract height and widht of the object in the video and it works.
Here there is my code:
