Viva Connections sends reoccurring notifications to Teams
In our global SharePoint Online intranet we have set all country sites as Official news sites and targeted news for each country. The problem with Viva Connections notifications in Teams occurs in one of the country sites: people who belong to the target group receive at least 4 notifications per news post (1 or 2 per day) saying “Review important news from your organization“.
This site is multilingual so there are several language versions for each news post. Do Viva Connections send a notification from each language version separately?
This is very annoying and we receive a lot of complaints. Why do we receive this kind of reoccurring notifications and what can we do to prevent them?
From all other sites we receive just regular notifications (1 per news post) saying “<Someone> published news”

auto populate excel tab with training opportunities
Hi,
My manager has asked me to look into streamlining our excel document that is meant to track our mechanics competencies and also keep track of which manufacturers courses they have done and when the last time is that they have done them. not all mechanics work with all brands so i don’t want to have the unnecessary brands on the mechanics tab.
my idea is that i would have a master data sheet that has every course our manufacturers have available linked to the manufacturers brand name.
but i would like to know if it would be possible that when i fill in those brand names on the specific mechanics excel tab as his competencies if it could then auto fill that mechanics tab with the manufacturers courses that are applicable to him.
and secondly it would be amazing if it is possible that it auto updates the mechanics tab if a new course gets added to the master data sheet linked to the manufacturer he/she has as his/her competency, so i do not have to manually update all the different mechanics tabs with the new course.
below a quick example of the courses tab and a simple mechanics tab to hopefully make it clearer. the courses would auto populate under the available courses.

Building Web Apps – A 6-Lesson Course
Why Learn Web Development?
A recent Forbes article estimated that the internet has over 1 billion websites today, with a new website built every 3 seconds. Most businesses prioritize having a web presence, with applications like e-commerce and entertainment continuing to drive traffic on mobile and desktop devices. This makes web development a very useful skill to have in your resume!
So, what programming language should you learn, to get started on this path? Building web apps starts with learning three fundamental technologies – HTML, CSS & JavaScript. These give you the skills you need to structure and style web pages and bring them to life with rich interactions that will enhance your users’ experience. The developer community agrees. In the past few years, JavaScript has continued to remain at the top of the GitHub Octoverse report for programming languages in terms of both popularity and usage.
How can you get started?
There are a number of resources available today to help you get started – including this free open-source curriculum built by Microsoft Cloud Advocates a few years back. This focused on a project-based learning approach that takes you from concepts to code understanding in practical ways that help you build your intuition through hands-on coding.
Since then, we have seen the adoption of new tools and technologies from development containers (like GitHub Codespaces) to AI assistance (with GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT) that don’t just improve our productivity as developers, but also help us establish continuous learning habits by giving us explanations, helping us fix issues interactively, and sharing “meta-prompts” related to our queries so we can expand our knowledgebase intuitively.
With our new LinkedIn Learning course “HTML, CSS and Javascript: Building The Web”, we revisit the core web technologies with project-based learning and AI assisted development in mind. Go from learning core building blocks, to coding hands-on projects, to learning how AI can be used to expand your understanding and streamline your development.
How is the course structured?
The course is divided into 6 lessons that take you from concept to code. Here is what you can expect for each lesson:
Short Videos – Each lesson consists of a series of short videos that explain a single concept or exercise for easy understanding.
GitHub Repo – The course is accompanied by a GitHub repo that has the starter code and tools required to follow along. Simply fork the repo to get started.
AI Assistance – The course has added segments that help you explore new AI tools like GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT alongside your development journey.
Plus, the repo is instrumented with a dev container. Just launch GitHub Codespaces and get a pre-built development environment ready for your use as a sandbox for exploration.
Lessons At a Glance
The course has 6 main lessons, each with multiple videos for a total viewing time of under 4 hours. Here is what we cover:
Welcome To Your Development Environment – Learn about core developer tools used in the course · Get started with GitHub Codespaces.
HTML Development – Learn about document structure, organization and features like accessibility · Put them all together in a starter project.
CSS Styling – Learn about stylesheets, cascading and inheritance, selectors and layouts, transitions and animations · Use them to style the project.
JavaScript Development – Learn about the DOM, understand variables, functions, closures and event handling · Make your project interactive.
Coding Projects – Adopt the “build to learn” mindset · Understand event-based programming · Understand game mechanics and 2D game development.
AI-Assisted Development – Adopt the “AI-Assisted Learning” mindset · Explore GitHub Copilot · Explore ChatGPT · Explore useful prompts for learning.
Conclusion – That’s a wrap! Let’s talk about resources to keep going.
By the end of the course, it is our hope that you walk away with three things:
A basic understanding of the building blocks of web development (HTML, CSS, JS)
A sandbox dev environment with starter projects (for self-guided exploration)
An intuitive sense for AI-assisted development (debug, explainers & productivity)

How I Write PowerShell Scripts for Microsoft 365
Selecting Effective Tools to Write PowerShell for Microsoft 365
Last week, I attended a PowerShell workshop at the TEC 2024 event in Dallas. Michel de Rooij and Jaap Wesselius, two well-known MVPs, ran the show. I was there to provide color commentary, which is the polite way of saying that I asked many annoying questions.
In any case, after the workshop one of the attendees asked me what tools and setup that I use to write PowerShell code for Microsoft 365. No one has the perfect answer as to how you should write PowerShell for Microsoft 365. To start the ball rolling, here’s what I do.
Use Visual Studio Code (VSC) to Write PowerShell for Microsoft 365
I use VSC for all my PowerShell work. It took me quite a while to get my head around using VSC because I didn’t like the PowerShell ISE and used to write with Notepad. I guess using a simple text editor is a throwback to the days when I wrote DCL scripts and ALL-IN-1 scripts at Digital Equipment Corporation. Old habits do die hard.
In any case, after learning and experiencing the advantages of VSC, I wouldn’t go back, even if Notepad (the most undervalued utility program in Windows) now supports autosave. VSC is updated monthly and keeps on improving, so it’s absolutely recommended.
Use GitHub to Store the Scripts Written for Microsoft 365
VSC is connected to the Office365ItPros GitHub repository. I used to simply publish bits of PowerShell or complete scripts in articles. That’s all very well until you need to update code to enhance its value or fix bugs (fixing bugs is a form of value enhancement). At an event in Oslo in 2018, Ståle Hansen, who used to write for the Office 365 for IT Pros eBook, suggested that I create a GitHub repository to store scripts. I’m glad that I did because GitHub is a great way to store and share code.
The Office365ITPros repository is not the best-organized store for PowerShell code that you’ll find on the internet, or even just in GitHub. It’s a bit scatty, like me. But I update the code as people suggest improvements or report bugs and add any new script that I write there, like the recent script to report sharing of files stored in OneDrive for Business accounts.
VSC makes the process easy by supporting connections to GitHub repositories. Once you link VSC to GitHub, it’s easy to synchronize (commit) any change made to a script in VSC or any new code that you write to update the repository (Figure 1).
Figure 1: Commiting a change to GitHub with Visual Studio Code
At the TEC 2024 PowerShell script-off, it was noticed that some of the competitors really struggled to find sample scripts or code snippets that could help them attack a new coding problem. Keeping everything in GitHub and having a local copy of your repository on your PC means that you can stay productive even when disconnected from the network.
Speaking of snippets, sometimes I need to write a small piece of code to illustrate a point that’s not quite a full script. I do this in VSC with a file that’s not synchronized with GitHub. Instead, it’s a simple file called “Working Stuff” that’s stored on my PC and full of PowerShell snippets that I’ve played with.
Use GitHub Copilot to Improve How You Write PowerShell for Microsoft 365
I’ve often asked if the $10/month charge for a GitHub Copilot license is worth the money: it absolutely is.
GitHub Copilot isn’t perfect (my experience using GitHub Copilot is described here). It can hallucinate and create some code that just won’t work, including calling cmdlets that don’t exist. But that’s the nature of generative AI. GitHub Copilot integrates nicely with VSC and if you keep a careful eye on what Copilot produces, it can save you time, improve your code, and even write comments.
Keeping Modules Updated
I test and run everything using the latest version of PowerShell 7. The outlier here is the SharePoint Online management module, which runs on PowerShell 5. I also use Azure Automation for various tasks.
Keeping modules up to date is important. In the last week or so, there’s been updates for the Teams (to 6.6) and Exchange Online modules (to 3.6), and the Microsoft Graph PowerShell SDK updates monthly or thereabouts. Add in SharePoint Online and other modules that you might use, and it takes some effort to keep everything updated. I use two PowerShell scripts to update:
My PC (never install PowerShell modules into your OneDrive for Business accounts. I mean, why would you?)
Azure Automation (PowerShell resources in Azure automation accounts).
Naturally, the scripts are available from the Office365ITPros repository. Happy coding!

Microsoft Partner Center access issues with CSP benefits
We are an existing CSP Indirect gold partner. We renewed our membership 2 months ago. Just recently after logging into Partner Center I noticed I no longer have Membership benefits and it appears under my profile that we are no longer registered as a CSP. No Earnings show… etc. MS Support provided the following to my support request:
Microsoft runs on trust, and therefore we engage in a rigorous set of evaluation and certification processes across third party individuals and organizations. As a result of our internal processes, we are unable to reactivate your access. Please note that this decision cannot be changed by opening a new support case.
So what is this and how do I resolve this? There needs to be a group that I can reach out to find out what the problem is?

“How Can Mixed Reality Tools Enhance Mobile Mechanics’ On-Site Diagnostics and Repairs?”
Mobile mechanics often need to solve complex vehicle issues with limited tools and resources. Could mixed reality (MR) devices like Microsoft HoloLens help by providing real-time access to diagnostic data, visual overlays on vehicle parts, or step-by-step guides while keeping mechanics hands-free? Additionally, how could MR enable remote collaboration with experts to troubleshoot problems during repairs? Let’s discuss how MR technology can transform mobile auto services by improving accuracy, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. What are the potential challenges or limitations in implementing MR for mechanics?

Migration in a dual AD/DB state
I am currently trying to migrate the AD server and DB server configured on-premises to Azure VM.
However, both the AD server and DB server are currently in a dual state on-premises, and when migrating to Azure VM, I plan to disable the dualization

In this case, I am wondering if there are any pre-preparations and additional settings that I need to make on MS SQL Server.

Server 2025 Licenses and requirements – SQL/File Server
I’m going to build a Server for a client this December.
It’s a small business 10 users – may increase to 15 at times, I will use it as a SQL server for a custom database and file server, backup server maybe SharePoint later.
We also have M365.
My questions are:
I might get away with Windows 11 Pro but I think there maybe limitations to that? (read on).I plan to use SQL Express as I think that it will be suffice, ASP.NET Framework 4, no true user authentication mechanism, just one SQL logon account. The previous Server is a 2008 R1 server, I’m not sure if I will use AD and buy cals. Was thinking a Intel Core-2 5 or 7 but may have to go Xeon.
In brief, can I get away with Windows 11 with SQL Express and upto 15 connections.
Can I File Share with Windows 11 and support 15 connections, I could also buy a NAS but the SQL I think should be on a Windows Bare-Metal Box.
Notes:
The old server will be toast as the OS and hardware is too old.
The old server does not support .net core so the database was never upgraded for this.
I would like to buy a retail licence, not oem for Server 2025 – if when need to replace the board in the future.
Inter- User Secuity is not a big deal except for the boss and accounts.

Dynamically select and merge columns while retaining others
Hi there
I am developing a solution in Power Query around a system export that contains a number of columns commencing with the text “Labels”. The number of these columns will vary depending on the query that generates the export, and I would like to build in some flexibility/intelligence so that Power Query will pick up all columns starting with “Labels” and merge them. The export’s header syntax is: Labels, Labels1, Labels2 and so on.
The original steps that I used are:
Inserted Merged Column = Table.AddColumn(#”Select Label Columns”, “Merged Labels”, each Text.Combine({[Labels], [Labels2], [Labels3], [Labels4]}, ” | “), type text)
Removed Columns = Table.RemoveColumns(#”Inserted Merged Column”,{“Parent id”, “Custom field (Access Type)”, “Issue id”, “Labels”, “Labels2”, “Labels3”, “Labels4”})
which would be fine if the number of Labels columns was fixed at four. I have added a new merged column and deleted the originals as when I did a direct merge, the delimiter was being added to empty cells – creating entries like ” | | | ” and this was a quick workaround.
In an attempt to dynamically identify and merge the columns for each data refresh, I inserted two steps after initial Source code:
Source = Excel.CurrentWorkbook(){[Name=”Export_Data”]}[Content]
List Label Columns = List.Select(Table.ColumnNames(Source), each Text.StartsWith(_,”Labels”))
Select Label Columns = Table.SelectColumns(Source, #”List Label Columns”)
This correctly selects the Labels columns, but it also removes all of the other columns in the table that aren’t in the List but are required for the report. I’ve tried, unsuccessfully, to combine the List functions into the merge steps and am at a loss.
How can I dynamically identify these “Labels” columns, merge them, and retain all other columns? I’m hoping that the solution will be obvious to you gurus out there, but if it helps, I can definitely create a dummy file. Looking forward to your help – thanks in advance. 🤗
