Clarification on Tracking Email Activity with Non-Microsoft Clients in Microsoft Graph API Reports
Dear Microsoft Support Team,
I am seeking clarification regarding how email activities are tracked in Microsoft 365 usage reports, specifically through the getM365AppUserDetail and getOffice365ActiveUserDetail Graph API endpoints.
We have observed cases where users show Exchange Online activity in the getOffice365ActiveUserDetail report, but no Outlook usage is reported across any platform (web, Windows, Mac, or desktop).
Our question is whether email actions taken using non-Microsoft clients (such as via SMTP or IMAP) are included in these reports. While we understand that activity within Microsoft 365 apps like Outlook and Exchange Online is tracked, we would like to confirm if email activity via third-party clients, PowerShell scripts, or external SMTP servers is reflected in the user activity reports, particularly when no Outlook usage is present.
Thank you for your assistance, and we look forward to your clarification.
