Volume Shadow Service crashes within NTDLL.DLL
I am trying to back up my disk with Dantz Retrospect using Open Volume Backup — i.e. VSS disk images. This has worked well for over a year, but since August 3, 2024 I am getting this event in the Windows 10 Event viewer:
Faulting application name: vssvc.exe, version: 10.0.19041.4355
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.19041.4522
Exception code: 0xc0000374
Fault offset: 0x00000000000f
I have re-registered all the dlls.
I have rummaged around on ChatGPT and Copilot for suggestions. None of them identified or resolved the problem. I have run:
scf /scannowother suggested utilities that I am not allowed to post here
I have re-installed Windows 10 and applied all the updates again.
I also get the same error if I try to create a Volume Shadow Copy “manually.”
So, it seems to me that this may have been caused by the KB5040525 update? How do I figure out for sure what the problem is and how do I fix it? Copilot claims no one else has seen the problem.
Upgrading to Windows 11 is not an option as my hardware is not supported there.
