Update: Security hotfix released for OLE DB driver for SQL Server
We’ve released hotfix packages for the following drivers to address an important security issue:
Microsoft OLE DB Driver for SQL Server (version 18.7.4 release notes / download)
Microsoft OLE DB Driver 19 for SQL Server (version 19.3.5 release notes / download)
The CVE for these OLE DB driver updates is:
CVE-2024-37334 – Microsoft OLE DB Driver for SQL Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
The issue involves connecting to a malicious server that sends malicious data in order to compromise a client. These driver updates are available via Microsoft Update, standalone download, and are included in the SQL Server 2019 and SQL Server 2022 updates that released July 9, 2024.
Next steps
For Windows installations, automatic updates will be provided via Microsoft Update or you can download the packages directly:
Microsoft OLE DB Driver 18 for SQL Server (version 18.7.4 download)
Microsoft OLE DB Driver 19 for SQL Server (version 19.3.5 download)
How do I know what version of a driver I have installed?
On Windows, look in Add or remove programs. The version is shown with the installed package. Additionally, you can look at the file properties of the installed files and inspect the Product Version field in the Details. Here are the main files for each driver:
Microsoft OLE DB Driver for SQL Server – %Windir%system32msoledbsql.dll
Microsoft OLE DB Driver 19 for SQL Server – %Windir%system32msodlebsql19.dll
Roadmap
We are committed to improving quality and bringing more feature support for connecting to SQL Server Azure SQL Database Azure Synapse Analytics, and Azure SQL Managed Instance through regular driver releases. We invite you to explore the latest the Microsoft Data Platform has to offer via a trial of Microsoft Azure SQL Database or by evaluating Microsoft SQL Server.

Public Preview of the Windows Server Annual Channel for Containers on Azure Kubernetes Service
Today, we are excited to announce the public preview for the Windows Server Annual Channel for Containers on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). The annual channel delivers a more agile and portable experience for our partners and customers in an accelerated annual cadence.
What’s New:
Portability
As mentioned last year, a large component of the benefits that the first edition of the annual channel brings is portability. With the addition of a new stable application binary interface (ABI) for user and kernel interaction, the user and kernel components of the system are decoupled, allowing for the components to be updated and maintained separately. This allows for older container images to run on a newer host OS, dampening the need for updating infrastructure and container images before updating the host. This means Windows Server 2022 container images can be run on the Annual Channel for Containers host.
Faster Innovation
The annual channel will be a completely optional upgrade for our customers, but one that drives faster innovation and higher quality for our customers. By providing an annual update to the container host, customers can now get performance, security and reliability improvements on a yearly-cadence basis versus a three-year cadence basis. In addition, the Windows Server Annual Channel for Containers will receive the same servicing as the current three-year Windows Server releases. This will not only allow users to consistently be on the best performing version of our container hosts but also ease the load when it comes time to migrate to newer versions.
How to get started:
To upgrade your Windows Server 2022 clusters to the Windows Server Annual Channel for Containers, customers will need to create a new node pool with the new “Windows Annual Channel” OS SKU.
Supported on nodepools running Kubernetes 1.28 and above, this page walks through detailed instructions on how to upgrade existing Windows Server 2022 nodepools as well as create your first Windows Server Annual Channel for Containers nodepool.

How to measure time of matrix multiplication in matab?
I am using R2023b in case that is important.
For the sake of a project, I am trying to measure the average time of matlab when it multiplies a 96 x 192 matrix with a 192 x 1 matrix.
I have used the following code:
repeats = 100;
tTot = 0;
m = 96;
n = 192;
for j = 0:repeats
A = rand([m,n]);
A(:,1) = 1;
b = rand([n,1]);
tic
c = A * b;
tTot = tTot + toc;
end
tAvg = tTot/repeats
I have run this script a few times on my computer with different values for "repeats":
If I set repeats to 1, I get the time it takes to complete a matrix multiplication is ~1.25e-04
If I set repeats to 10, I get the time it takes to complete a matrix multiplication is ~8.75e-05
If I set repeats to 100, I get the time it takes to complete a matrix multiplication is ~5e-06
It seems quite strange to me that the average changed so much if I increase the value for repeats, so my questions are: Am I doing something wrong when I am measuring the average time? If yes, what am I doing wrong?I am using R2023b in case that is important.

solving symbolic equations with partial derivatives
hello, I can’t find a solution to the following problem: i am trying to solve symbolically some equations which include partial derivatives and a change of reference.
Here is the code:
syms Cf(zf, zr) Cr(zf, zr) theta z L
z = zf;
theta = (zf – zr)/L;
Cf_z = diff(Cf, z);
Cf_f = diff(Cf, zf);
Cf_r = diff(Cf, zr);
Cf_theta = diff(Cf, theta);
eqn = [diff(Cf, z)*diff(z, zf) + diff(Cf, theta)*diff(theta, zf) == diff(Cf, zf), diff(Cf, z)*diff(z, zr) + diff(Cf, theta)*diff(theta, zr) == diff(Cf, zr)];
S= solve(eqn)
when i run this, the following error appears:
"Second argument must be a variable or a nonnegative integer specifying the number of differentiations." (@ line 7) because i doesn’t recognize theta as a variable of Cf. How can i make the change of reference effective so that it can calculate the partial derivatives of Cf in the new reference z, theta?

How to solve type mismatch error when assigning variable to class in conditional?
Example Code:
1 flag = true;
2 if flag
3 this.prop = TFlag();
4 else
5 this.prop = FFlag();
6 end
Error Code:
Type name mismatch: TFlag ~= FFlag.
In the diagnostic report, the error is shown in line 5, where this.prop cannot be assigned FFlag() because it is understood as a varible of class type TFlag().
Question:
It appears that this.prop is being intialized as a variable of class type TFlag regardless of the condition, and I am unable to run this conditional. It should also be noted that the constructor method of each of these classes returns a struct(), but they are different sizes. TFlag returns a struct of size 30, and FFlag returns a struct of size 10.Example Code:

How to skip to next cell value if current cell doesn’t match the criteria in the formula
Hi,
I have a following problem:
In Sheet1 employees copy/paste some data about customers.
They always have same 5 rows and are always copies in column A (see photo below):
There can be thousands of rows because they keep adding each day new data.
I need to create a formula in Sheet2 to copy/paste all this data (using formula, not actually copy/pasting) into a table which is more easier to filter data in.
Example how I want it to look like:
so,
I want it all copied like this and avoid blank rows.
I tried using this formula for A2 in Sheet2 (and similar for B2,C2….) , but I am not sure how to skip the cell if it doesn’t match the criteria, so it ends up looking like this: =IF(COUNTIF(Sheet1!$A2,”*E-mail*”),Sheet1!$A2,””)
Any idea how to do this using a formula or is VBA needed here?
Thanks in advance!

Say hello to the Talking Postgres podcast
The TL;DR of this blog post is simple: the “Path To Citus Con” podcast for developers who love Postgres has been renamed—and the new name is Talking Postgres.
And if you’re just hearing about the Talking Postgres podcast for the first time, it is a monthly podcast for developers who love Postgres, with amazing guests from the Postgres world who talk about the human side of Postgres, databases, and open source.
Listening to the Talking Postgres podcast is the next best thing to being in the hallway at a Postgres conference, eavesdropping on other people’s conversations and learning from the experiences of experts. As Floor Drees says, it’s as if you’re sharing a coffee with them.
Past podcast guests include (in order of appearance) some amazing Postgres, database, and open people such as: Simon Willison, Marco Slot, Abdullah Ustuner, Burak Yucesoy, Melanie Plageman, Samay Sharma, Álvaro Herrera, Boriss Mejías, Thomas Munro, Grant Fritchey, Ryan Booz, Chelsea Dole, Floor Drees, Paul Ramsey, Regina Obe, Andres Freund, Heikki Linnakangas, Dimitri Fontaine, Vik Fearing, Lukas Fittl, Rob Treat, Jelte Fennema-Nio, Derk van Veen, Arda Aytekin, Chris Ellis, Michael Christofides, Aaron Wislang, and Teresa Giacomini. The podcast is produced by the Postgres team at Microsoft—and I have the privilege of being your host.
So whether you’re an existing listener or new to this podcast, we hope you enjoy the Talking Postgres podcast—and help to spread the word about the new name.
Some key things to know about the Talking Postgres podcast
Why did we rename the podcast?: Guests & friends repeatedly—and I mean repeatedly—nudged us to rename the podcast to a name that makes it more clear what the podcast is about. And at the end of the day it’s about Postgres things! So while the podcast was born in March 2023 as a pre-event to last year’s Citus Con—hence the original name, “Path To Citus Con”—Talking Postgres has grown into its own monthly podcast that has everything to do with Postgres and little to do with Citus Con (now called POSETTE.)
Where can you catch up on past podcast episodes?: All 16 of the past episodes of Path To Citus Con can now be found on the talkingpostgres.com site—as well as on the Talking Postgres playlist on YouTube, and wherever you get your podcasts.
If you’re already subscribed to the podcast, are you still subscribed?: We renamed the previous podcast, so if you were already subscribed, you should still be subscribed. Same thing for the RSS feed, it should just work! If you have any problems, please let us know via the #talkingpostgres channel in the Microsoft Open Source Discord.
Can you still attend the LIVE recording of the podcast on Discord each month?: Yes! Inspired by the Oxide and Friends podcast that is hosted by Bryan Cantrill and Adam Leventhal—two of my former teammates from the kernel group at Sun Microsystems—we also record Talking Postgres (formerly Path To Citus Con) each month on Discord—with a parallel live text chat that is quite fun to be part of.
When are the future LIVE podcast recordings: If you’ve never participated in this type of live podcast recording, you might want to give it a try. It’s easy to subscribe to the Talking Postgres calendar of future LIVE podcast recordings: we usually record on Wed mornings Pacific Time (PT) on the 1st or 2nd Wednesday of the month.
Episode 17 of Talking Postgres will be recorded LIVE this Wed July 10, 2024: This July, our guest is Pino de Candia—the former co-host of the podcast—and the topic will be a bit “meta” this time! We’ll explore “Podcasting about Postgres” and we’ll look back at some of our greatest hits, talk about some of the other wonderful Postgres podcasts we listen to, and of course we’ll spend a few minutes reflecting on the podcast rename (why why why!) This Ep17 calendar invite should give you all the instructions you need to join us live on Discord this Wed Jul 10th at 10:00am PDT.
And David Rowley is scheduled to be the guest on the August episode: Since David Rowley—a Postgres committer—is based in New Zealand, Ep18 in August with David Rowley will be recorded at an unusual time for us, on a Tuesday, specifically at 4:00pm PDT on Tue Aug 6th. The topic will be “How I got started as a developer & in Postgres” and we hope you can join us on the parallel live text chat! David is brilliant—and I’m definitely going to have to do my homework on Postgres performance topics to prep for the conversation, since that is one of David’s specialties.
Let us know what you think of the podcast & please use hashtag #TalkingPostgres
The new hashtag for the new podcast name is #TalkingPostgres. And as soon as we see some interesting tweets, toots, and threads about the podcast using the new name, perhaps we’ll add some of them to the talkingpostgres.com website.
For now, here is a screenshot highlighting guests and topics for some of the most recent podcast episodes. You can of course subscribe to Talking Postgres and listen from anywhere, wherever you get your podcasts from. Enjoy!
